I have never lost a penny
That I can recollect
Though many have passed through my hands
Being given only casual respect.
But I have found lots of pennies,
Maybe hundreds along the way,
And each has brought a strike of good luck
To that moment of the day.
How is it that I should be so blessed
With all that I have found,
That love and faith and hope
Be just strewed upon the ground?
Were others so mindful of my needs
That they thought they should be sharing,
By leaving bits of copper about
To show that they were caring?
Or is it the little things we give away,
The things we never miss,
That makes the difference between a life so sad
And a life that’s filled with bliss?
I know I will never get rich
On the pennies that come to me.
For all that they could buy
They’re just drops upon the sea.
But as long as you’re there to give me
Your smile, your wisdom, your hand
The drops that fall will be tears of joy
As soft rain upon dry land.
